Position Summary Accurately and efficiently accesses hospital billing and information systems to secure and assemble all necessary physician records to allow for accurate coding and billing of professional physician and/or physician extender service. Responsibilities Essential Functions - Reviews medical records and codes physician services utilizing current ICD-10 and CPT classifications systems. - Verifies billable physician services by reviewing physician documentation for adherence to the “Physician At Teaching Hospital” rules set forth by the federal government. - Submits to coding any issues or trends found within the documentation of a particular physician for evaluation and follow up. - Assembles and inputs coding results in the current Practice Management billing system to expedite proper billing. - Batches and balances daily charges, checking provider, place of service, date of service, referring physician, diagnoses, and procedures. - Completes daily charge reconciliation, ensuring that CPT codes used by providers are in line with procedures performed. - Collaborates with members of the specialty team to monitor and satisfy corporate financial goals within their specialty. - Interfaces with the Central Business Office to ensure appropriate and complete follow-up of patient accounts to maximize reimbursement. - Communicates effectively with physicians, physician extenders, physician offices, members of the coding team, and managers. - Utilizes resource material available in the department to support accurate coding practices. - Maintains patient confidentiality. - Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills. - Provides data for production reports. - Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. - Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures. Other Related Functions - Participates in meeting department goals. - Maintains productivity standards. - Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development through educational programs, research, etc. - Maintains certification status. Qualifications Education/Training - High school graduate or equivalent. - Computer/typing literacy and working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology required. - Thorough knowledge of CPT and ICD-10, as evidenced by results of coding skills test. Licensure/Certification Holds or obtains a CPC, CPC-A, CGIC, CGSC, CCA, CCS, or CCS-P at time of hire or within one (1) year of hire. Experience - One (1) year of physician practice or hospital-based coding experience required; or In lieu of experience, must have completed a coding certificate program and hold one of the following certifications: - Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), renewed every year. - Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A) through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), renewed every year. - Certified Gastroenterology Coder (CGIC) certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), renewed every year. Certified General Surgery Coder (CGSC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), renewed every year. - Certified Coding Associate (CCA) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), renewed every year. - Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), renewed every year. - Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), renewed every year.
