Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator I for the Road & Bridge division. This position will be located in various locations throughout Volusia County and will be responsible for semi-skilled work in the operation of less complex types of equipment to complete road maintenance and drainage tasks, performing daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after each use.

Illustrative Duties

(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)

  • Operates mowers and tractors equipped with mowing attachments.
  • Operates commercial trucks (less than 10 wheels) with gross weight over 8,000 pounds, including dump, flatbed, and water wagon trucks.
  • Drives fuel truck to various parts of the county and services equipment with fuel.
  • May operate small, gasoline-powered machinery and hand tools, such as cement mixers, air compressors and hammers, pumping equipment, and saws.
  • Sets signs and barricades.
  • Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew.
  • Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
  • Performs routine service and maintenance of equipment.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Completion of the eighth (8th) grade and one (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of commercial light to medium trucks or similar equipment.

NOTE:

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire and maintain thereafter.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire.

Must possess a valid Florida CDL Class B within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the operation, routine maintenance, pre- and post-trip inspections, and use of dump and flatbed trucks or tractors, and of the less complex public works equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing the use of equipment throughout the county.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in the operation of equipment.
  • Skilled in the safe operation of flatbed and dump trucks, tractors, mowing attachments, and the less complex construction equipment.
  • Ability to make emergency repairs to motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others and establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations.


ADA REQUIRMENTS:

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, and memos. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details. Ability to perform basic math.

Physical Demands: Heavy work. Ability to pull, push (arm and leg), lift, and carry 75 pounds. Ability to reach, climb, sit, turn (neck, body), handle, and see (near and far acuity, depth perception, field of vision). Visual acuity (depth perception, peripheral vision) necessary to operate motorized vehicles.

Environmental Demands: (Demands may change depending on assignment.) Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.
