This is technical work involved in all aspects of the operation and maintenance of a surface water treatment plant. The employee works under the general direction and supervision of the Chief Water Plant Operator. The employee typically works shifts in combination with other Water Treatment Plant Operators but may be assigned to work certain shifts alone.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Monitors the water treatment facility's performance to insure effective treatment and pumping of the community's water supply.
  • Adjusts the treatment process or pumping, as required, to effectively treat and deliver potable water in compliance with all rules, regulations and the facility's standard operating procedures.
  • Maintains accurate and comprehensive operation and maintenance records.
  • Performs minor maintenance tasks and assists the maintenance staff, as necessary, with major or unusual maintenance tasks.
  • Monitors computer telemetry to alert other County staff to problems with lift stations or lagoon aeration.
  • Collects samples and performs routine physical and chemical analyses on water.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent; AND
  • One (1) year experience in the operation of a potable water treatment plant(s).
  • A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications except for the required certification.
Licenses and/or Certifications
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
  • Possession of and maintain a valid Class "C" Water Treatment Plant Operators certification issued by the State of Florida (FAC 62-602).

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of potable water treatment equipment and the processes involved in the treatment and pumping of water.
  • Knowledge of basic physical and chemical analyses for potable water quality analysis.
  • Knowledge of project management and organizational skills.
  • Skilled in the use of basic mechanical repair tools and procedures.
  • Ability to have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.
  • Ability to comprehend, speak, and read the English language.
  • Ability to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
  • Ability to read meters, charts, and gauges and accurately maintain records of plant operations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written technical information and to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
Work is primarily performed indoors but requires some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.) or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust.

This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations

Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. May require lifting up to 100 pounds and carrying up to 100 pounds.

Work Location
Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non-portable nature of the essential functions of this position, this position is not eligible for telework.
